Association of Catalase Gene rs769217 Polymorphism with Carotid Intima-media Thickness in Diabetic Patients
نویسنده
چکیده
Diabetes mellitus is a risk factor for atherosclerosis/cardiovascular diseases. Atherosclerosis in diabetic patients has been linked to increased oxidative stress and intima-media thickness is used to detect its presence. Catalase is involved in hydrogen peroxide catabolism and is important in defense against oxidative stress, which contributes significantly to atherosclerotic processes. There are no data on association of catalase gene genotypes of rs769217 polymorphism and carotid artery intima-media thickness. Therefore, this study investigated the potential association of catalase rs769217 polymorphism and intima media thickness in diabetic patients. Right and left carotid intima-media thickness increased (P≤0.001) in type 1 and type 2 diabetes when it was compared to those of controls. Blood catalase activities of CC genotypes of rs769217 polymorphism in catalase gene were associated with cITT (P<0.043) in type 1 diabetics, type 2 diabetics and in controls. This interesting new finding could suggest that diabetics and controls with CC genotype of rs769217 polymorphism may have higher carotid intima media thickness and higher risks for cardiovascular events when they blood catalase is high. This higher catalase could destroy hydrogen peroxide more effectively thus preventing the signaling action of hydrogen peroxide. ISSN 2475-545

Background: Microangiopathy and macroangiopathy frequently coexist in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Both types of the vascular complications share traditional risk factors but it is not clear whether the presence of microangiopathy, such as diabetic retinopathy, constitutes a predictor of atherosclerosis in carotid arteries in patients with the disease. In this study we looked for the associ...

Background and Aim: Androgenetic alopecia (AGA) is the most common cause of hair loss after puberty and its association with comorbid diseases including metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular diseases has become well known over the past two decades. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between androgenetic alopecia with carotid artery intima media thickness as a marker for earl...

Background and Objective: Diabetes type 2 has been estimated as the seventh leading cause of death worldwide. Diabetic patients are 2-3 times more likely to be at the risk of atherosclerosis, compared to normal people. It has been reported that exercise prevents atherosclerosis in diabetic patients. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the effect of exercise on vascular variables...

Introduction: Common carotid artery intima-media thickness (CCA-IMT) correlates with cardiovascular mortality in patients under hemodialysis. In this investigation, we evaluated relationship between CCA-IMT with dependent and independent cardiovascular risk factors in chronic hemodialysis patients. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 51 chronic hemodialysis patients, (31 males and 20 fema...

Background: The aim of this study was to assess the association of serum adiponectin and a set of traditional cardiovascular risk factors with carotid artery intimal-medial thickness (CIMT) and coronary artery calcium score (CACS), as markers of subclinical atherosclerosis in subjects with early type 2 diabetes mellitus. Methods: Carotid artery intima- media thickness (measured by B-mode ultrso...
